Respiratory Therapist

Job Title: Respiratory Therapist (full time)

Job Summary: The Respiratory Therapist provides high-quality care to patients with breathing or cardiopulmonary disorders. This role involves assessing patient conditions, administering treatments, and monitoring responses to various respiratory therapies. The RT collaborates with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Patient Assessment: Conduct thorough assessments of patients’ respiratory and cardiopulmonary status through physical examinations, diagnostic tests, and patient interviews.
  • Treatment Administration: Administer oxygen therapy, ventilatory support, and other respiratory treatments according to established protocols and physician orders.
  • Monitoring: Continuously monitor patients’ vital signs and respiratory parameters, adjusting treatments as necessary and reporting significant changes to the healthcare team.
  • Patient Education: Educate patients and their families about respiratory conditions, treatment plans, and home care techniques to promote effective self-management and improve outcomes.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate and detailed records of patient assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, and other relevant information in compliance with healthcare regulations and standards.
  • Emergency Response: Respond to respiratory emergencies, providing critical care interventions such as intubation or CPR as needed.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans and ensure cohesive patient management.
  • Equipment Management: Operate and maintain respiratory care equipment, including ventilators, nebulizers, and oxygen delivery systems, ensuring they are functioning correctly and safely.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Therapy or a related field from an accredited program.
  • Licensure/Certification: Valid Respiratory Therapist (RT) license as required by NY state regulations; Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentials preferred. Current BLS by the American Heart Association
  • Experience: Previous experience in a clinical setting is desirable; experience in critical care or emergency settings is advantageous.
  • Skills: Strong knowledge of respiratory care techniques, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, critical thinking abilities, and proficiency in using respiratory care equipment.

Work Environment:

  • The Respiratory Therapist will work 12 hour nights. The role will require alternating weekends, and holidays.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and move patients, operate equipment, and perform tasks requiring physical stamina and dexterity.
